Holidays, these days, are hardly a restful break and more commercial than holy. Nevertheless, they are here and for most of us, that means a time fraught with urgent tasks, lists, stress and, alas, exhaustion. The holiday season is packed with shopping, negotiating the joys and exasperations of family and friends, choosing gifts, watching budgets, long hours, late hours, no time and meeting non-stop expectations. 2017 has been such a complex year for all of us. 12 months. 365 days. 8760 hours. You get the idea. Time’s winged chariot sweeping us all forward.
A Soothing Bath
I want to suggest a reprieve to the holiday hustle and bustle and to the ennui of year’s end. If you find that you are feeling overwhelmed because you are not quite ready for what’s upon us and what’s coming, try an old fashioned bath. Our love of hot showers is understandable: they are quick, and easy. Taking a bath, takes precious time. First, we have to carve out the time to indulge (why oh why does a soothing bath feel indulgent, rather than healing and deserved?) to draw water into a bathtub, choose our favourite bubbles, light a candle maybe? The whole ritual may feel like an investment of more time than we can muster right now, but oh how soothing, restorative and balancing a wonderful bath can be. Water is so abundant and available, that it’s taken for granted. Yet, water can ease tired aches and pains like nothing else. Water treats us better than acetaminophine.
Using a few drops of essential oils in a bath that is bonus!! If you take your bath before retiring to bed, and add your favourite essential oil, relaxation is imminent. Essential oils are an easy way to create a therapeutic herbal bath. OK, here’s the drill. Get the bath ready (check); dim the lights and even add a candle to the ambience (check); spend at least 20 minutes in there (check); play your favourite music, soothing and soft (check). To feel the benefits of essential oils, more is not necessary. Lavender essential oil is very relaxing and helps if you have trouble sleeping.
The next time you feel tired and frazzled, fill up your bath tub and soak the stress out of your day!
